Dental Implants Through Time

A glance through the pages of modern history suggests that recent developments and innovations in dental implants have been successful in their mission to replace teeth that have been lost. The modern dental implant made a first appearance around the 1970s but the origins of these sophisticated implants can be traced to its crude beginnings stretching as far back to the time of the Ancient Egyptians.

Around 2500 BC, these Ancient Egyptians would attempt to stabilize teeth using gold ligature wire. Fast forward to 300 AD, the Phoenicians would use teeth carved from ivory and held in place by gold wire. The first concrete evidence of dental implants can be credited to the Mayans as early as 600 AD. Archaeologists uncovered ancient skulls and discovered that the teeth had been substituted with implants carved from stones to using pieces of shells as a replacement for a lost tooth. But the real amazement from this archaeological recovery is that even with these primitive materials and crude methodology, some of the early implants had fused to the jawbone- no different from the present-day modern dental implant.

The purpose of dental implants was originally to provide a convenient solution for people who had lost all of their teeth and were experiencing difficulty with dentures, mainly because much of the jawbone had been lost on which dentures tend to rest upon. But today, dental implants can also be used to replace a mere single tooth or several missing teeth.

Back in the day, dental implants implemented a one-size-fits-all design that was most certainly not customized for the wearer. If it didn’t fit, tough luck. These initial implants bore the same circumference (width) and only varied by the length. The surfaces of the original dental implants were polished and smoothened by machine.

In the present day, dental implants have evolved and improved greatly. Gone is the “one-size-fits-all” mentality. Today, a patient can get an implant that has been personalized to their jaw structures and mouth. Modern dental implants come in an array of sizes and shapes, all intended to be a suitable replacement for the natural tooth to be swapped. The surfaces of modern implants are no longer machine-polished or machine-smoothened. Instead, these new type of implants have been improved, roughened through the process of sandblasting and acid etching, drastically increasing the surface area for the bone to latch and attach onto, enhancing the osseointegration process.
