Top Tips For Maintaining a Healthy Smile

Maybe nobody has told you this, but the first thing people notice about others is their smile. A good reason you should put effort to maintain your beautiful smile.

The good part is, it takes just a little effort on your part to pull this. In fact, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is all you need to achieve this. And here are 10 things you should do every day to help you enhance your smile.

Invest In A Good Toothbrush
We all know that regular brushing is necessary to maintain healthy teeth and smile. But a few of us know that the quality of the toothbrush is also very important. A manual toothbrush is great but if you have the means, invest in an electronic toothbrush. Most electronic toothbrushes have different features and modes and can be adjusted to fit your need at any given time. For example, you can adjust the modes for regular tooth whitening, sensitive tooth, and regular brushing.

However, if you still prefer brushing the good old way, make sure you go for a high-quality toothbrush with a soft bristle. Hard bristled toothbrushes are particularly bad for oral health as they contribute to enamel erosion.

Floss Daily Or USe Oral Irrigator
Toothbrushes, especially manual ones do not remove plaque that hides between the teeth. So if you insist on using such toothbrush, make sure you floss after meals to remove food debris and bacteria hidden in crevices. Unremoved food debris can quickly lead to plaque and tartar buildup, which lays the foundation for further degradation.

Some people complain that daily flossing causes bleeding gum but this is untrue. If you bleed whenever you floss, it may be a sign of gingivitis. If you notice this, quickly consult your doctor as untreated gingivitis can easily end up as periodontal gum disease.

For you one of those that hate flossing, you can try oral irrigation. This works the same way as flossing and removes food debris by spraying mouthwash or water in between teeth.

Drink Lots of Water
Drinking lots of water are good for your health, not just for oral health. But since we are talking about oral health, water helps to maintain the pH levels required to maintain a healthy smile. It flushes food particles hidden in between the teeth and helps to prevent plaque buildup.

Reduce Your Intake of Tea, Coffee, and Red Wine
Taking lots of water is important but you should also stay away from certain foods and drinks or reduce your intake of them. Some of the foods and drinks you should stay away from include coffee, tea, and red wine. These foods are teeth colorants and steady exposure to them can leave permanent stains on your teeth.

If you can’t reduce your intake of any of these drinks, consider using a straw whenever you drink tea or wine. An also endeavor to rinse your mouth with water to remove the superficial stains that can quickly turn into a permanent stain.

Quit Smoking
You already know that cigarette smoking damages your lungs, heart and other important organs of the body. But do you also know that your teeth could suffer as a result of smoking?

When you smoke, the teeth enamel absorbs some of the smoke and nicotine leading stained teeth. At first, the stain is superficial and can be removed by brushing and rinsing your mouth. However, with time, the smoke can extend throughout the teeth, making it difficult to remove.

In addition, smoking can damage your gumline because cigarette smoke contains toxic compounds that can lead to receding gumline. If you are observant, you must have noticed that smokers often have teeth with longer, darker spaces between them. So if you can, quit smoking for better health, overall.

See Your Dentist At Least Twice In A Year
If you have healthy teeth, there may be no need to visit your dentist every month. However, you should endeavor to set appointments with him o her at least twice in a year. This will help ensure that dental issues are spotted early on and taken care of.

Similarly, if you notice any sign of swollen or bleeding gum, make sure you fix an appointment with your dentist, some times, these are not just signs of unhealthy teeth. Some dental conditions have been found to be associated with health conditions like heart attack, diabetes, stroke, and so.
