When it comes to modern dental treatments- dental implants are arguably one of the best. Lately, Dental implants have become a popular treatment for several dental complications. However- the variety of dental implants available makes it easy to leave anyone confused about the best treatment for one’s condition. In this article, we have a clear breakdown of how your dentist can determine the best treatment.
Endosteal Implants
This is one of the most common types of dental implant dentists choose for patients – that is done on the jawbone. Your dentist will choose this as your treatment only if you have a good, healthy jawbone for the implant to fuse to.
Endosteal Implants are surgically implanted directly into your jawbone. And when the surrounding gum tissue has healed, your dentists will need to conduct a secondary surgery to connect a post to the original implant. Finally, an artificial tooth is individually attached to the post to finish up the treatment or grouped on a bridge or denture – if the patient has any.
If you don’t like the idea of something being placed into your jawbone, your dentist might consider another type of dental implant.
Subperiosteal Implants
This is the main substitute or alternative to Endosteal Implants. In this treatment, the implants are not fixed into the jawbone. Instead, they are resting on top of the bone – but still under the gum tissue.
A metal frame that is fitted onto the jawbone with a post attached to it – just below the gum tissue. When the gum heals around the frame, the frame becomes fixed to the jawbone and the posts, which are attached to the frame, protrude through the gums.
Then the artificial teeth are easily mounted to the posts. Your dentist will recommend this implant treatment if you don’t have enough jawbone for an implant to be placed.
Zygomatic Implants are another type of implant treatment your dentist may recommend if you don’t have enough jawbone. It is one of the least-opted and complicated treatments, where an implant is placed in your cheekbone rather than the jawbone.
Alternative procedures and techniques to dental implants
It’s good to mention that as long as you have the following such as good health, good bone density, free from any diseases or disorders that can interfere with your healing process- you are a suitable candidate for dental implants. After considering these, your doctor will decide on an appropriate treatment for you – depending on your tooth requirements.
However, still, everyone is subject to a different experience when it comes to dental implants, and some factors like these may influence your implant treatment procedure:
- The location of the implants within the jawbone
- The number of teeth that requires a replacement
- Your underlying oral and systemic health
- The quality and quantity of bone at the implant site
Depending on these factors, your doctor may recommend that you need certain additional procedures or alternative dental implant techniques- such as,
- Sinus Augmentation
- Ridge Modification
- Immediate Load Dental Implants
- Mini Dental Implants (MDI’s)
- All-On-4®
